North Carolina Insurance Continuing Education (CE) Courses

State Proctor/Monitor Requirements:

• CORRESPONDENCE courses are required to be monitored by a disinterested third party.
• ONLINE exams DO NOT require a proctor for North Carolina insurance continuing education.

NC Insurance Continuing Education Online Renewal Requirements:

• An Existing Licensee is any agent licensed on or before December 31, 2007.
• In 2008 and 2009, existing licensees’ CE hours will be prorated based upon the birth month and birth year (odd/even) of the licensee. After the 2008 & 2009 compliance period a licensee must complete 24 hours, 3 of which must be in Ethics, every 2 years based on his/her birth month and birth year.
• The 2008 and 2009 CE requirements will be prorated based on 1 hour per month up to 24 months.

Example:

• An agent with a birth date of February 16, 1960, would have the following CE requirements and compliance dates: 2 hours by February 28, 2008 and 24 hours by February 28, 2010.
• An agent with a birth date of April 4, 1957, would have the following CE requirements and compliance dates: 16 hours by April 30, 2009 and 24 hours by April 30, 2011.

• A New Licensee is any agent licensed on or after January 1, 2008.
• 24 hours for the first renewal and 24 hours every 2 years thereafter.

Example:

• An agent with a birth date of December 1, 1960, licensed in 2008, is required to meet 24 hours of CE by December 31, 2010.
• An agent with a birth date of October 1, 1957, licensed in 2008, would be required to meet 24 hours of CE by October 31, 2011.

State Specific (required) Courses:

• 3 hours of total North Carolina Insurance Continuing Education credits hours must be completed in Ethics
• Each person holding a property and liability, personal lines, or adjuster license shall complete a continuing education course on flood insurance and the National Flood Insurance Program within two years after January 1, 2008, and every four years thereafter.
• Adjusters and Agents who hold one or more of the following licenses: Property, Casualty, Personal Lines, Life, Accident/Health and Variable Life/Variable Annuity Products may complete their 24 North Carolina Insurance CE credit hours requirement by taking courses in any line of authority.

North Carolina Insurance CE License Renewal Timelines:

• Individual licensee’s compliance date will be determined by the licensee’s birth month and birth year. North Carolina Insurance Continuing Education will need to be completed by the last date of your birth month. In 2008 and 2009, existing licensee’s continuing education hours will be prorated based upon the birth month and birth year (odd/even) of the licensee. After the first compliance period a producer must meet a 24 hour continuing education credit hours requirement each biennial period based on the producers birth month and birth year.
